Seasonal Variations of Carbonyls and Their Contributions to the Ozone Formation in Urban Atmosphere of Taiyuan, China

Ambient carbonyls are critical precursors of ozone (O3) and secondary organic aerosols (SOA). To better understand the pollution characteristics in Taiyuan, field samplings were conducted, 13 detected an urban site Taiyuan for four seasons. The total concentration atmosphere was 19.67 ± 8.56 μg/m3. Formaldehyde (7.70 4.78 μg/m3), acetaldehyde (2.95 1.20 μg/m3) acetone (5.57 2.41 dominant carbonyl compounds, accounting more than 85% carbonyls. highest values formaldehyde occurred summer autumn, respectively, lowest winter. variations not distinct levels increased obviously daytime decreased at night, while did show significant diurnal variations. Higher temperature stronger sunlight intensity could facilitate photochemical reaction volatile compounds (VOCs) enhance O3 summer. contributed 70–95% carbonyls’ formation potential (OFP) caused by with totals 268.62 μg/m3 38.14 μg/m3, respectively. concentrations from south southwest winds suggest that coke industries southern Basin should be, firstly, controlled alleviation pollution.
